A traveler mistakenly boarded the wrong airline at Copenhagen Airport, confusing their easyJet flight with a Ryanair one and ending up in Bologna, Italy instead of Berlin, Germany. According to reports, the incident occurred sometime last week, as both airlines had flights scheduled to Bologna and Berlin on six days of the week.

According to Swedish tabloid Expressen, a 79-year-old traveler accidentally boarded a Ryanair flight to Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ) instead of a flight to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) at Copenhagen Airport (CPH) last week. The mistake was made due to the two flights departing from the same gate and the airport screens directing passengers flying with easyJet to Berlin to the same gate.

The passenger stated that they had gone through security and saw a queue of people at the gate, assuming it was for their easyJet flight. However, upon landing in Bologna, they realized their mistake as they were greeted with a welcome sign for the Italian city.

The traveler, who boarded the wrong flight, told Expressen that they had shown their passport and boarding pass, but were unsure how they ended up on the wrong airline’s aircraft in Copenhagen. They also mentioned that none of the staff had noticed their error.

Data from aviation analytics company Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning tool showed that Ryanair and easyJet had scheduled six and 16 departures to Berlin and Bologna, respectively, between May 19 and May 25. The Irish low-cost carrier offered the passenger a taxi to Venice, where they stayed in a hotel before boarding a flight from Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) to Berlin on May 23.

Flightradar24 records showed that on May 22, Ryanair’s flight FR2676, operated by Malta Air, was scheduled to depart Copenhagen for Bologna at 10:40 local time (UTC +2), while easyJet’s flight U2 5266 from Copenhagen to Berlin was scheduled to depart at 12:55. However, the latter flight departed at 14:01 and arrived in Berlin at 14:42 local time (UTC +2).

Although rare, incidents involving stowaways do occur. Some stowaways attempt to flee their countries by hiding in the landing gear of aircraft, sometimes successfully despite the extreme conditions. In other cases, passengers mistakenly boarding the wrong aircraft can pose safety risks to flights if they are a potential threat.
