American Airlines reported improved on-time performance across its network in the second quarter. This was the first full quarter under a new schedule at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). Although there was a slight increase in on-time departures at DFW, it still remains the second-worst performing hub among the busiest airports in the US.
In April, American Airlines implemented a new schedule at DFW, moving from a nine-bank schedule to 13 smaller banks. This change was made to alleviate congestion and improve reliability at the airline’s largest hub. According to an American spokesperson, these changes have resulted in strong operational performance and improved customer experience.
The overall arrival rate for American’s network in the April-to-June quarter was 76. 6%, an increase from 72. 6% in the same period last year. Cancellations also decreased from 2. 1% to 1. 9%. Other major carriers, including Delta, Alaska, and United, also saw similar improvements, with Delta showing the highest increase in on-time arrivals.
While DFW’s on-time departure rate improved by 1. 1%, it lagged behind most of American’s other hubs. Charlotte and Philadelphia, which also implemented the new 13-bank schedule, showed four times more improvement than DFW. However, American noted that Philadelphia had the highest customer satisfaction ratings in May.
The increase in severe weather events in the Dallas/Fort Worth area during the spring season impacted American’s performance, causing delays and cancellations. American also pointed to the longer scheduled block times as a factor in improving on-time performance. The new schedule also thinned out the early-morning departure bank, allowing for smoother connections throughout the day.
American’s Chief Operating Officer, David Seymour, stated that early results showed improved on-time arrivals and less congestion with the new schedule. However, the OAG data, which tracks departures across the full quarter, do not differentiate weather delays from other causes.
In conclusion, American Airlines saw an overall improvement in on-time performance in the second quarter, with the new schedule at DFW showing some positive results. The airline continues to make efforts to improve reliability and customer satisfaction, especially during periods of severe weather.
