Swissport Expands E-Commerce Network in Europe with New Warehouse at Liège Airport
Swissport, a global leader in ground handling and cargo services, has announced the opening of a new second-line warehouse at Liège Airport (LGG) in Belgium. This 5,500 m² facility is dedicated to import parcel handling and adds to Swissport’s existing e-commerce footprint at the airport, bringing the total to 9,000 m². The expansion strengthens Swissport’s position in one of Europe’s fastest-growing cargo hubs.
The new warehouse was purpose-built for high-volume, fast-turnaround operations and has a throughput capacity of up to 300 tons per day. It offers fully integrated import handling services, including cargo collection, shuttling, breakdown, scanning, sorting, and final loading for last-mile delivery.
Dirk Goovaerts, CEO of Continental Europe, Middle East, Africa, India & Global Cargo Chair at Swissport, stated that this investment enhances the company’s ability to provide fast, data-driven, and sustainable logistics solutions for its airline and integrator customers.
Operations at Liège Airport integrate customers’ Warehouse Management Systems with Swissport’s CargoSpot platform, allowing for real-time visibility and data integrity. The bonded site is optimized for cross-dock efficiency and is designed to manage complex, piece-intensive flows through fully digital workflows and a skilled local team.
Wilfried Jans, Managing Director of Swissport Belgium, noted that the expanded footprint allows the company to handle higher parcel volumes while maintaining reliability and precision. Frédéric Brun, Head of Commercial Cargo & Logistics at Liège Airport, added that this development solidifies LGG’s position as a leading European hub for e-commerce and express logistics.
In line with Swissport’s global sustainability standards, the new warehouse operates with paperless processes and has comprehensive recycling programs in place for cardboard, wood, and plastics.
This expansion is part of Swissport’s global strategy to develop scalable e-commerce capacity at major trade gateways. It joins specialized hubs in Brussels, Milan, Basel, New York JFK, and Shanghai, further reinforcing Swissport’s role as a reliable partner for airlines and freight forwarders in key markets.
With the addition of this new warehouse, Swissport is well-equipped to meet the increasing demand for e-commerce services in Europe and continue providing efficient and sustainable solutions for its customers.
