Weather Delays Impact Memorial Day Travel Plans

Over 45 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home this Memorial Day weekend, setting a new record for the holiday. However, unfavorable weather conditions are causing delays for certain flights headed to popular destinations like Colorado, Texas, and California.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has reported a Traffic Management Program in effect for planes arriving at Denver International Airport, with an average delay of 30 minutes due to weather. Flights heading to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and San Francisco International Airport are also experiencing delays of nearly an hour and 28 minutes, respectively, due to thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey continues to face challenges with construction and staffing shortages, resulting in significant delays and cancellations. To address these issues, the FAA has issued an interim order reducing flight arrivals and departures until construction on one of its runways is completed on June 15. This means there will be only 28 arrivals and 28 departures per hour, as opposed to the usual 34, until the end of October.

Acting FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau stated that the goal of this interim order is to alleviate the substantial inconvenience caused to travelers by excessive flight delays. These delays have been exacerbated by recent equipment issues and staffing challenges, highlighting the ongoing struggles faced by the air traffic control system.

The air traffic control system has been under pressure for years due to staffing shortages, outdated technology, and underinvestment in critical infrastructure. These issues have been particularly evident at Newark Liberty International Airport, the second-busiest airport in the New York airport system, where travelers have faced several-hour delays and hundreds of canceled or delayed flights in recent weeks.

Aside from the ongoing challenges with the air traffic control system, Newark’s issues have been further compounded by ongoing construction at the airport. This has left the airport temporarily operating with only one of its two parallel runways, adding to the strain on the already overburdened air traffic control system.

In conclusion, while the travel industry remains optimistic, it is clear that improvements and investments are needed to address the challenges faced by the air traffic control system. Until then, travelers should be prepared for potential delays and disruptions, especially during times of unfavorable weather conditions.
