On May 21, 2025, James Asquith, CEO of Global Airlines, made history by launching the first flight from Manchester Airport to New York JFK on the Airbus A380. Asquith, who holds the Guinness World Record for being the youngest person to visit every country in the world, has a background in travel but not aviation. His childhood dream was to launch his own airline, and with Global Airlines, he aims to bring back the “Golden Age of travel.
The maiden voyage of the A380, registered as 9H-GLOBL, was operated by Hi Fly, as Global Airlines does not have an airline license yet. The aircraft, previously flown by China Southern, bears the marks of its former life but is covered in Global Airlines branding. Despite some negative reviews following the inaugural flight from Glasgow, Asquith remains confident in the success of Global Airlines. He assures that there will be more flights from Manchester to JFK, stating, “I can guarantee that will happen, guarantee it.
Asquith praised Manchester Airport for their support in launching the flight and expressed his gratitude towards their team. He also discussed the challenges of acquiring and maintaining the A380, stating that without this aircraft, Global Airlines would not be able to offer the “big and bold” experience that they aim to provide. He also mentioned plans to update the aircraft’s interior to reflect the Global Airlines brand, but acknowledges that major modifications can take up to five years to complete.
The Global Airlines experience currently offers a top-of-the-market soft product, including blacklane chauffeur drive for business and first-class passengers and caviar in business class. Asquith also mentioned plans for future improvements, such as a spa and onboard bar, to create a more social and luxurious experience for passengers. He emphasized that the main goal was to get the A380 off the ground and that the airline has come a long way since its conception, despite facing numerous challenges.
Asquith concluded by stating, “For us, the main thing was getting it in the sky and not being delayed anymore. ” He believes that with the current product and plans for future improvements, Global Airlines is in a good place and is confident in the success of the airline. The launch of the Manchester to JFK route marks the beginning of a new chapter for Global Airlines, and Asquith’s determination and passion for the industry will undoubtedly drive the airline towards success.
