Air Travelers Encouraged to Dress to Impress by Transportation Secretary
In a recent statement, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy urged air travelers to dress more appropriately when flying. While the comment caused some backlash, it also found support among passengers at New York-area airports.
Duffy’s statement, made at Newark Liberty International Airport, asked travelers to avoid wearing slippers and pajamas when flying. Many passengers agreed, stating that dressing well can lead to better treatment and a more positive attitude towards others.
Traveler Tamaya Garcia, 48, was seen at JFK Airport in a stylish outfit consisting of a wool tan coat, white body suit, tan cashmere pants, and Nike sneakers. She stated that she always makes an effort to look presentable when flying and even refuses to let her daughter fly in pajamas.
Melanie Cox, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Toledo, also supports Duffy’s statement, saying that dressing up for the airport can be fun and can lead to unexpected encounters with others. She was seen at Newark Liberty International Airport wearing a matching set from White Fox.
Kim and Tommy Scarpati from Monmouth County, New Jersey, were seen at Newark Airport with their two young daughters, Nia and Evie, all wearing matching hot-pink attire with their initials on their sweatshirts. Kim stated that she agrees with Duffy’s sentiment and believes that dressing well shows respect for others and the situation.
Other travelers, however, disagreed with Duffy’s call to make air travel spiffy again. Mashenka “Dip” Clapp, 28, stated that people should be allowed to be comfortable and dress in a way that works for them. She also pointed out that for long international flights, it may be more logical to wear pajamas for sleeping.
Despite differing opinions, one thing is clear: people have strong feelings about how they dress when flying. Some, like Prince Green, prefer a more comfortable and simple outfit, consisting of a black t-shirt, maroon-colored hoodie, gray sweatpants, and black socks and slippers. He stated that he is happy with his appearance and finds the outfit quick and comfortable for airport security.
Ultimately, dressing well for the airport is a personal choice. Elizabeth, a traveler at JFK, stated that she always makes an effort to look good and coordinated, even during a long and uncomfortable flight. She stated that it is important to her to leave the house looking put together.
Jillian Carter, 32, from Brooklyn, was seen at JFK wearing an all-black outfit with silver sneakers. She stated that her mother always told her to look her best when out and about, especially at the airport. She believes that dressing well shows respect and effort.
In the end, whether travelers choose to dress up or dress comfortably, it is important to feel good and confident in one’s appearance.
