Travelers Expected to Use Port of Authority of New York and New Jersey During Memorial Day Weekend
During the upcoming 5-day Memorial Day peak travel period from Thursday, May 22 to Monday, May 26, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is expecting a high volume of travelers. Nearly 5. 5 million travelers are expected to use the agency’s airports and vehicular crossings during this time.
Airport Travel
The agency is anticipating approximately 2. 1 million passengers to travel through John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia, and New York-Stewart International airports during this period. This is a slight decrease of 1% from the all-time high seen during the same period in 2024. The busiest days at the airports are expected to be Friday and Monday. International seat capacity is expected to be 1% higher than in 2024, indicating a resurgence and interest in international travel.
Travelers are strongly advised to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time. Due to higher passenger volume and ongoing construction, longer wait times are expected. Passengers on domestic flights should arrive at least two hours before their departure time, and those on international flights should arrive at least three hours before departure. The Port Authority has provided air travel tips for travelers, including how to find real-time wait time information for TSA security lines, parking lot availability, and information on public transit and for-hire vehicles.
Road Travel
Over the holiday period, approximately 3. 4 million vehicles are estimated to use the agency’s bridges and tunnels, similar to the volume from the same period in 2024. To accommodate this high volume, all non-emergency repairs and construction projects at the crossings will be suspended from 5 a. m. Friday, May 23 to 5 a. m. Tuesday, May 27. A separate travel advisory will be issued next week for any lane closures or service changes for the remainder of the week.
Travelers are strongly encouraged to allow for extra travel time or utilize public transit whenever possible. The Port Authority has announced service changes that will be in effect from Thursday, May 22 to Monday, May 26, and advises travelers to plan accordingly.
