Delegation Calls for Negotiation with SkyHop Global Shuttle Drivers
A group of New York Congressmembers, including Rep. Nydia Velázquez, is urging SkyHop Global to negotiate with its shuttle drivers at LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy International and Newark International airports. The letter was sent after the employees went on strike last November due to disputes over wages and labor practices.
The 60 shuttle drivers, who are predominantly Black, Asian, and people of color, provide crucial shuttle services for airline crew members at these airports. Despite voting to unionize with Teamsters Local 210 in May of 2024, the drivers are still without a contract almost a year later. According to the delegation’s letter, the strike was prompted by SkyHop’s repeated refusal to bargain in good faith over wages, job security, and a union contract. The employees have also filed over 20 cases with the National Labor Relations Board and NY State Dept. of Labor, alleging retaliation from the company.
The Congressional letter warns that the ongoing disruption caused by the strike not only harms the workers, but also the broader travel network that relies on these essential services. The letter was signed by Brooklyn Representatives Yvette Clarke, Dan Goldman, and Jerry Nadler.
Wind Power Projects Affected by Trump’s Permit Pause
In January of this year, President Trump’s executive order freezing offshore wind projects has raised concerns about the future of a massive wind power project in Sunset Park. The project, which is expected to bring renewable energy and jobs to the community, may face delays due to the permit pause.
The Brooklyn Eagle Staff reports that the project, along with other wind power projects, has been met with opposition from the Trump administration. This has caused uncertainty and concern for the future of renewable energy projects in the area.
While the fate of the Sunset Park project remains uncertain, the Trump administration’s actions have caused setbacks for the development of renewable energy sources. The Brooklyn Eagle Staff will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
