New Parking Rates at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has recently implemented new parking rates in order to address capacity issues and fund improvements to the airport’s parking facilities. The changes, which went into effect in April 2019, have resulted in an increase of hourly, daily, and economy parking rates.

Hourly parking rates have seen the biggest increase, going from $3 to $10. This was done intentionally as the previous rates were significantly lower than other major airports such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and Denver. The daily max for the first day has also increased from $36 to $50, with subsequent daily rates rising from $19 to $30. Economy parking has gone up from $14 to $20, while the ATL West deck and domestic park-ride have both increased to $30 and $15 respectively.

The reasoning behind these changes is to encourage short-term parkers to utilize alternative modes of transportation, such as MARTA or ride-sharing services like Uber. This will help alleviate the parking crunch and make room for those who only need to quickly drop off or pick up passengers from the airport.

The increased revenue from the new rates will also go towards funding the construction of new parking decks, which are expected to add over 7,700 additional parking spaces by next summer. This should help alleviate the strain on parking during peak travel seasons, such as spring break and the Masters golf tournament.

However, some travelers have already experienced the effects of the tight parking situation. One traveler, Timothy Hannan, had pre-booked a parking reservation at ATL West, only to find the deck full upon arrival. This resulted in a last-minute scramble to find alternative parking and ultimately resulted in him missing his flight. While he believes the airport rates needed to increase, he plans to change his parking strategy in the future by utilizing ride-sharing services or reserving off-site parking.

The airport is also constantly evaluating and modeling its future parking needs to avoid overbuilding or underbuilding. This is particularly important with the rise of autonomous vehicles and the potential for changes in parking demand.

In the meantime, construction on new parking decks is already underway, with plans for a new North deck and improvements to the international terminal parking. The airport is also implementing new technology, such as indicator lights above parking spots, to help travelers easily find available parking spaces.

Despite the initial challenges and adjustments, airport officials are confident that the new parking rates will ultimately improve the overall parking experience for travelers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
