EVA Air, a Star Alliance carrier, has recently announced the launch of a new ultra-long-haul service connecting Taipei, Taiwan to Washington D. C. , the capital of the United States. The new route, set to begin on June 26, will initially operate four times a week using the airline’s Boeing 787-9 aircraft. With this new addition, EVA Air will now operate to a total of ten North American destinations.

The non-stop flight between Taipei Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) will take approximately 17 hours during the winter season, covering a distance of over 7,100 nautical miles (13,149 km). Due to airspace restrictions, the flight will have to take a longer route across the North Pacific Ocean, avoiding Russian airspace.

This announcement by EVA Air comes just a month after Simple Flying, an aviation news analysis platform, predicted the launch of this route. The privately owned Taiwanese carrier currently serves seven other destinations in the US, with Washington D. C. becoming its eighth. This highlights the importance of the US market for the airline, which also launched a route to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) last year, making it the only Asian airline to serve multiple destinations in the state of Texas.

Below is the flight schedule for the new Taipei-Washington route, as per Aeroroutes:

With the addition of Washington D. C. , EVA Air now operates to a total of eight destinations in the US and ten in North America. This makes it the largest carrier by destinations served between Taiwan and the US. China Airlines, the flag carrier of Taiwan, currently operates to six US destinations, while up-and-coming Starlux Airlines serves four.

In terms of US carriers, Delta Air Lines (from Seattle) and United Airlines (from Guam and San Francisco) are the only ones offering flights to Taiwan. As for Washington Dulles, the new Taipei route will become the longest flight from the airport, with a block time of over 17 hours. This is followed by Air China’s twice-weekly service to Beijing, and United Airlines’ thrice-weekly flight to Cape Town, South Africa.
