American Airlines Announces Limited Expansion for Summer 2027

American Airlines had initially planned to announce 13 new long-haul routes for summer 2027, but due to delivery delays from Boeing and Airbus, the carrier has had to scale back its plans. In an exclusive interview with AirlineGeeks, Brian Znotins, American’s senior vice president of network planning, revealed that the airline will now only be able to add seven new routes to its summer 2027 schedule.

Limited by Aircraft Availability

Znotins explained that in February of this year, American had expected to have 13 additional long-haul aircraft available for the summer 2027 schedule. However, delivery delays from Boeing and Airbus have reduced that figure by five aircraft. This has forced the airline to limit its expansion plans for the summer of 2027.

Disappointment with Boeing and Airbus

Znotins expressed his disappointment with Boeing and Airbus for not delivering on their promises and causing delays in aircraft deliveries. He stated that if the aircraft manufacturers had fulfilled their promises, American would have been able to expand its route network significantly for summer 2027.

New Routes and Restored Flights

Despite the limitations, American will still be adding seven new routes to its schedule for summer 2027. These include flights from Philadelphia to Vienna, Porto, and Reykjavik; New York-JFK to Amsterdam and Nice; Charlotte to Barcelona; and Chicago O’Hare to Tokyo Narita. Additionally, the airline will be restoring a fourth daily flight between New York-JFK and London Heathrow.

Aircraft Utilization and Future Expansion

Znotins mentioned that the seven new routes will most likely be the extent of American’s long-haul expansion for summer 2027, unless unexpected improvements in aircraft availability occur. He also discussed the possibility of using aircraft that were previously expected for the first half of 2027 for winter 2027 routes, and the potential for further expansion in summer 2028.

The Role of the A321XLR

American’s Airbus A321XLR will play a significant role in the seven new routes, with four of them using the aircraft. This includes flights from New York-JFK to Amsterdam and Nice, and Philadelphia to Porto and Vienna. Znotins mentioned that the airline has used operational data from partner Iberia, who already operates the A321XLR across the Atlantic, to better understand the aircraft’s performance. This has given American the confidence to schedule longer routes, such as Vienna.

Vienna as a New Destination

Vienna will be a new destination for American, with service from Philadelphia starting on May 6. Znotins explained that the city had been under consideration for years, but the A321XLR finally gives American an aircraft with the appropriate capacity for the market. He also mentioned that Vienna will be the only U. S. destination served by American, providing connections throughout the country.
