DFW International Airport is currently undergoing a $4 billion project to build a new terminal, named Terminal F, which is set to open to the public in 2027 and be fully completed by 2030. While some may have been expecting a grand architectural masterpiece, the new terminal is instead designed to be a modern and efficient space that will improve the overall travel experience.

When DFW first opened in 1975, its chief architect Gyo Obata described it as an “efficient tool” rather than a monument. The new Terminal F, a joint venture between DFW and American Airlines, continues this theme with its no-nonsense design. The 400,000-square-foot terminal will be exclusively occupied by American Airlines and will be accessed through the airport’s “Skylink” rail system, with drop-off at Terminal E. It will also be connected to a new parking structure and, eventually, Terminal D. Construction is currently underway with the first phase expected to open in 2027.

Renderings of the new terminal show a bright and open space with curved glass walls. A central area will serve as a gateway and will include dining and retail options. From there, passengers will travel down a linear concourse to reach their gates. The project is being led by Innovation Next+, a consortium of architecture, construction, and engineering firms.
