Cayman Airways Announces Conclusion of JFK Service
Cayman Airways Limited (CAL) has recently announced its plans to end its nonstop service between Grand Cayman and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) on October 19, 2026. The airline has been operating this route for almost twenty years, with a temporary suspension during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has transported nearly 500,000 passengers and has been an important link between the Cayman Islands and the New York metropolitan area.
However, with multiple airlines currently serving the New York/Cayman route, offering a variety of schedules and pricing options, Cayman Airways has decided to conclude this service, stating that the competitive environment ensures convenient access and reflects the strength of the Cayman Islands’ tourism market. This decision was made in collaboration with the Cayman Islands Government and Department of Tourism, who regularly assess market performance, demand trends, and national priorities to ensure the greatest long-term benefit for the country.
The timing of this conclusion has been strategically chosen to align with a natural seasonal schedule change and the planned closure of the existing Terminal One facility at JFK, where the airline has operated since the route’s launch in 2007. This allows for a smooth and well-planned transition for customers and operations.
Fabian Whorms, President and CEO of Cayman Airways, expressed pride in the airline’s role in connecting the Cayman Islands with one of its most significant international markets. He also stated that this decision reflects a thoughtful approach to network planning, allowing for the redeployment of aircraft capacity towards new routes and services that support the airline’s long-term strategy and the evolving needs of the Cayman Islands.
The Hon. Gary Rutty, Deputy Premier and Minister of Tourism and Trade Development, thanked Cayman Airways for its pioneering role in developing the New York market and its continued partnership in building global connectivity for the destination. The Director of Tourism for the Cayman Islands, Mrs.Rosa Harris, also emphasized the partnership between the Department of Tourism and Cayman Airways in identifying and developing key markets, such as the recent announcement of a new nonstop service to Austin, Texas.
The conclusion of the JFK service will see CAL’s fleet of four Boeing 737-8 aircraft redeployed to support the development and strengthening of new routes and expanded services across the network over the next several years. Cayman Airways remains committed to thoughtfully developing and supporting routes that enhance connectivity, stimulate demand, and contribute to the growth and resilience of the Cayman Islands’ tourism industry and economy.
