Avelo Airlines, a budget carrier based in Texas, is facing criticism from both customers and employees for its decision to operate deportation flights as part of a new contract with the Trump administration. The airline, which has been struggling financially, signed a deal with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to transport migrants to detention centers in and outside of the country.

The aggressive crackdown on illegal immigration by President Donald Trump has sparked numerous lawsuits and protests. Avelo’s first deportation flight under the new contract took place on Monday from Arizona to Louisiana, according to data from flight-tracking services.

To fulfill the contract, Avelo plans to use three of its aircraft solely for deportation operations and has established a charter-only base in Mesa, Arizona. However, the union representing Avelo’s flight attendants has called the contract “bad for the airline,” and one customer has organized a petition to boycott the airline.

Despite the backlash, Avelo is standing by its decision. The airline confirmed its long-term agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and stated that it is crucial for the company’s financial stability. CEO Andrew Levy acknowledged the sensitivity of the topic but emphasized that the decision was made after careful consideration.

The company also stated that the contract will ensure the employment of its more than 1,100 crew members for years to come. Avelo will be using three Boeing 737-800 planes from its Mesa, Arizona base for the deportation flights, but did not disclose further details
