American Airlines Considers Adding New Destinations to Its Network

American Airlines recently announced a list of potential new destinations that it is considering adding to its network. The list includes both brand-new locations and resumptions of previous routes. The list was revealed during a company event where attendees had the opportunity to vote for their preferred destinations. This follows a similar initiative by Delta last year.

Narrowing Down the Options

American Airlines had already narrowed down the list of potential destinations. While it is likely that at least one of them will be chosen, there is a possibility that multiple destinations could be added. The Airbus A321XLR would be a crucial aircraft for most of these routes, including the carrier’s newly announced service from Philadelphia to Porto.

The Ten Potential Destinations

The list of potential destinations includes cities in Europe, Africa, and South America. One notable destination is Cape Town, which would likely be served by the Boeing 787-9. South African Airways previously operated flights between Cape Town and Miami until 2000. The distance between Miami and Cape Town is 6,663 nautical miles, making it the second-longest nonstop route for American Airlines after Dallas to Brisbane. However, due to ongoing tensions between the US and South Africa and limited traffic rights, it is unlikely that Cape Town will be added in the near future.

Southern Europe Likely to Be Added

The trend among US travelers is towards Southern European destinations, particularly for tourism and visiting friends and relatives. With this in mind, it is reasonable to assume that American Airlines may add flights to Palma de Mallorca or Seville.
