American Airlines Plans to Cut Flights to Cuba: What You Need to Know
American Airlines has recently filed motions to reduce its services to various cities in Cuba, including Havana, Holguin, Varadero, and Santiago de Cuba. The carrier is seeking to scale back its daily Miami-Santiago de Cuba round trip and cut several of its Miami-Havana round trips. These changes are intended to help the airline better manage its resources and operate more efficiently in the US-Cuba market.
The request to reduce services does not necessarily mean that the routes will be permanently eliminated. The Department of Transportation must approve the request before any changes can take place. In addition to American Airlines, United, Delta, and Southwest also offer flights to Cuba. However, United has announced that it will be suspending its direct Houston to Havana route starting September 2.
Americans should be aware of the State Department’s rules for traveling to Cuba. Although a tourist visa is required, travel for tourism purposes is banned. Travelers are advised to exercise caution due to the risk of petty crime and to avoid displaying signs of wealth. It is recommended to exchange currency at a licensed bank or airport and to declare any amount over $5,000 when entering or leaving the island.
In 2017, Frontier also cut its daily Miami to Havana flight due to changes in the market. Former President Trump added Cuba to the list of nations that are a State Sponsor of Terrorism, and his administration reinstated sanctions that were later reversed by President Biden. Some lawmakers, such as Florida Senator Rick Scott, are calling for even stricter restrictions on travel to Cuba.
Overall, American Airlines’ request to reduce services to Cuba reflects the current state of the US-Cuba market and the efforts of airlines to adapt to changing regulations and policies. Travelers should stay informed of any updates and follow the State Department’s guidelines when planning a trip to Cuba.
