BA CityFlyer: A Regional Airline Serving London City Airport

BA CityFlyer is a subsidiary of British Airways, established in 2007 to cater to the regional airline sector. It operates 20 aircraft to 33 destinations, with London City Airport (LCY) as one of its main operating bases. Other operating bases include London Stansted Airport (STN) and Edinburgh Airport (EDI).

Routes and Operations

Data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, shows that BA CityFlyer currently operates 19 routes from London City Airport. In May 2025, the airline plans to operate 1,288 departures with an average journey distance of 450 miles (724. 2 km).

BA CityFlyer offers a range of routes for both business and leisure travelers, using full BA colors, titles, and flight numbers as a wholly-owned subsidiary of British Airways. The subsidiary was formed in 2007 after British Airways sold BA Connect to Flybe, excluding London City Airport operations. BA CityFlyer replaced the previously Gatwick-based CityFlyer Express, which had been integrated into British Airways in 2001.

The airline initially had a fleet of ten Avro RJ100 regional jets, with two Avro RJ85s added in 2008. In the latter half of 2008, BA CityFlyer announced further fleet expansions, ordering 11 Embraer E-jets (six E170s and five E190s with options for three more E190s). In 2018, the carrier reported a 28% increase in profits. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and the decision to withdraw its planned summer 2025 flights from Southampton Airport have posed recent challenges.
