United Airlines Implements New Headphone Policy for Passengers

In an effort to reduce noise in its aircraft cabins, United Airlines has recently updated its contract of carriage to require all passengers to wear headphones while using personal electronic devices. This amendment gives the airline the right to remove anyone who does not comply with the rule and potentially ban them from flying with United in the future.

According to the revised contract of carriage, any passenger listening to music, watching a video, or scrolling through social media with sound must wear headphones. Failure to do so could result in being refused transport on a permanent basis. This new policy, quietly updated on Friday, is a unique move among major U. S. airlines.

Scott Keyes, a travel expert, states that while airlines do encourage the use of headphones, this is the first time he has heard of a rule explicitly stating that failure to comply could result in removal from the aircraft. He believes this policy is in line with the behavior of most travelers and is a graceful way to handle those who make noise without using headphones.

United also notes on its website that in some cases, they will provide free earbuds to customers who forget theirs. The airline states, “Don’t worry if you forget your headphones for your flight. If they’re available, you can request free earbuds.

It is important to note that this policy change does not affect the use of headphones during safety announcements or while communicating with airline personnel. It only applies to personal entertainment during the flight. Additionally, United’s website states that they reserve the right to remove any passenger who disrupts the flight with loud or offensive behavior, regardless of whether they are using headphones or not.

While this policy may seem strict, it is a step towards creating a more pleasant and comfortable travel experience for all passengers. United’s new headphone rule is a reminder for all travelers to be considerate of those around them and use headphones when listening to audio or video content during flights.
