New Restrictions Issued for Newark Liberty International Airport by FAA
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently implemented new temporary restrictions on flights in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. The decision came after a series of disruptions, including technology outages, staff shortages, and runway construction, caused severe flight delays and cancellations at the busy airport.

FAA’s New Plan for Newark
According to the new plan released after a meeting with major airlines, flights at Newark will be limited to 28 departures and 28 arrivals per hour until June 15, and every weekend between September and December. From June 15 onwards, the airport will allow a maximum of 34 departures and arrivals per hour until October 25. These hourly traffic limits will apply every day during the busy morning and afternoon hours.

The FAA’s acting administrator, Chris Rocheleau, stated that the goal of these restrictions is to reduce the inconvenience to the traveling public caused by excessive flight delays and ensure passenger safety. The FAA also estimates that only 24 air traffic controllers are currently overseeing Newark, which is far fewer than the recommended 38 controllers. Additionally, there are 26 trainees at the Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON), which is responsible for Newark’s air traffic control. However, it is unclear how many of these trainees are specifically focused on Newark.

Response from Airlines
United Airlines, which operates the majority of flights at Newark, has welcomed the new restrictions. The airline stated that reducing the number of flights scheduled will help ensure safe and reliable operations. They have also proactively reduced their schedule earlier this month, in anticipation of the restrictions.

Concerns about Passenger Safety
Despite reassurances from officials, concerns about passenger safety have increased due to the recent disruptions at the airport. The FAA has acknowledged the staffing crisis among air traffic controllers nationwide and announced new incentives to recruit and retain more controllers. However, the shortage of controllers has resulted in near misses at Newark, leading to further delays and cancellations.

Conclusion
The new restrictions at Newark Liberty International Airport are an effort to address the ongoing disruptions and ensure passenger safety. The FAA and airlines are working together to mitigate the issues and improve operations at the airport. However, it remains to be seen if the problems can be fully resolved before the restrictions are lifted.
