Storms and Floods Cause Chaos in Mid-Atlantic and Northeast

Torrential rainfall and flash flooding wreaked havoc in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Thursday, causing major disruptions to travel and taking the life of a child in Maryland. This is just one of many severe flood events that have occurred this summer.

The storms began in the afternoon and continued into the evening, with flash flood warnings issued for parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia. Reports of flooded roads and stranded vehicles came in from the National Weather Service and local officials in these areas.

In New York City, heavy rain caused major traffic delays on a major east-west thoroughfare in Queens, leaving cars and a semi-truck stranded in the water. One man was even seen sitting on the roof of his car, waiting for rescue.

In Manhattan, videos from inside Grand Central Terminal showed a Metro-North train drenched in rain, with one passenger comparing the experience to being in a car wash. Another video showed water pooling on the floor of a city bus in Brooklyn.

In Philadelphia, intense rains caused several leaks at SEPTA stations, according to spokesperson Andrew Busch. Crews were able to dry the surfaces, but the flooding caused significant disruptions to transportation.

New Jersey and New York both declared states of emergency due to the potential for intense rainfall and flash flooding. In Maryland, Governor Wes Moore urged residents to be prepared for potential flash flooding. In Harford County, about an hour north of Baltimore, several water rescues were reported between 1pm and 3pm.

Tragically, a young boy in Maryland lost his life after being swept into a drainage pipe by the flash flooding. According to a spokesperson for the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company, he was playing in the yard when the gully he was in quickly became waist-deep for rescuers. Despite their efforts, he was unable to be saved.

The severe weather also caused disruptions to air travel, with ground stops in effect at major airports in New York and Washington D. C. Thousands of flights were cancelled or delayed due to the storm.

These heavy rains were the result of a cold front breaking a long-lasting heat dome that has been plaguing the East Coast with extreme temperatures. This summer has seen numerous rain and flood events, with climate change playing a major role. Rising global temperatures are causing more frequent and intense rainfall, and the mid-Atlantic and Northeast have already seen above-average rainfall this season.

As the storms have come to an end for much of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, the flood risk now shifts south into the Carolinas and parts of Georgia. This summer has been marked by numerous severe weather events, including Tropical Storm Chantal, which caused flooding in North Carolina and took the life of one person.

It is important to stay informed and prepared for severe weather events, as they can occur at any time. Stay tuned to local weather reports and follow any evacuation or safety instructions from officials.
