High Risk of Radiation-Linked Cancers for Commercial Air Crew Members

A recent study has revealed that among more than 500 professions, commercial air crew members face the highest risk of dying from radiation-linked cancers. The study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, analyzed over 12 million death certificates and found that flight attendants had the highest percentage of deaths from radiation-connected cancers, with pilots following closely behind. This is a cause for concern as both professions have a significantly higher fatality rate from these types of cancers compared to other occupations, even those involving the handling of radioactive materials.

The study focused on cancers that are known to be connected to radiation exposure, such as leukemia, lymphoma, skin cancer, breast cancer, and thyroid cancer. Surprisingly, pilots and flight attendants did not show higher death rates for cancers that are not linked to radiation.

The reason for this increased risk is due to the higher levels of cosmic radiation that air crew members are exposed to during their frequent flights. While smaller studies have suggested a potential link between this radiation and higher rates of cancer in these jobs, the data is not conclusive, and the elevated risk is not widely known.

Unfortunately, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) does not currently track or measure air crew’s radiation exposure, even though they are aware that they face higher levels of radiation. Sara Nelson, the president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, has expressed her concern over this issue, stating that crew members are not educated or informed about the risks they face, and no one is taking responsibility.

The study’s authors acknowledge some limitations, such as a lack of information about the amount of radiation pilots and flight attendants are exposed to. They also noted that lifestyle factors associated with these jobs, such as irregular schedules, sleep disruption, and jet lag, can negatively impact overall health.

In conclusion, the study highlights the need for increased awareness and action to address the risks that commercial air crew members face from radiation exposure. It is crucial for the FAA and airlines to take this issue seriously and implement measures to protect the health and well-being of their employees.
