Supersonic Air Travel Set to Make a Comeback After 22 Years
Supersonic air travel, which has been absent since the retirement of Concorde in 2003, may soon become a reality once again. A new aircraft, called the Overture, is currently in development and is expected to significantly reduce flight times between the UK and America. The Overture is being designed by Boom Supersonic and could potentially travel from New York to London in just three hours and 40 minutes. The aircraft is expected to be ready for commercial use by 2029.
The United States recently lifted a decades-old ban on supersonic air travel over land, making it possible for the Overture to fly at speeds of Mach 1. 7 over land and twice as fast over water. This development has caught the attention of major airlines, with United Airlines and Japan Airlines already placing orders for the Overture to add to their fleets. The planes will have a capacity of 60 to 80 passengers and are designed to cruise at higher altitudes than standard jets, reaching up to 60,000 feet.
One of the biggest concerns with Concorde was its loud noise, but the new supersonic planes will be equipped with modern noise-reduction technology. Denver-based aviation company Boom is responsible for producing the Overture, and United Airlines has announced plans to purchase 15 of the supersonic airliners in order to “return supersonic speeds to aviation”. The Overture is expected to have a minimum of 600 routes, making it a viable option for high-end, short-haul luxury routes.
While the return of supersonic air travel is exciting, it may not appeal to the average holidaymaker looking for a quick getaway. However, the Overture could cater to time-sensitive premium travelers, offering them a prestigious and time-saving option for short-haul flights.
The potential for the Overture to reduce journey times on popular routes, such as London to New York or Los Angeles to Washington, is significant. These flights could be reduced from six to seven hours to just two hours, making them a desirable option for those with time constraints. The first Concorde flight took off in 1976, with cruising speeds of Mach 2. The aircraft was a joint venture between Britain and France, who were looking to develop supersonic air travel during the Cold War.
Unfortunately, Concorde was involved in a fatal accident in 2000, which led to its eventual retirement. However, with advancements in technology and a focus on sustainability and safety, the Overture could have a successful relaunch. The return of supersonic air travel could offer a unique and luxurious travel experience for those willing to pay a premium for shorter flight times.
