Spirit Airlines Announces Workforce Changes as Part of Restructuring Efforts

Spirit Airlines, a low-cost airline, has announced that it will furlough 365 pilots and downgrade the status of up to 170 pilots in the first quarter of 2026. This decision comes as the company continues to revamp its workforce in order to return to profitability by 2027.

The airline, which recently filed for bankruptcy for the second time in a year, has stated that its business plan requires a reduction in network and fleet size in 2026. In order to align staffing with these changes, Spirit Airlines will be making additional adjustments to its workforce.

The company has stated that “volume-based staffing adjustments” will be made across its maintenance stations and that it will be closing its maintenance stations and warehouse operations in Baltimore and Chicago effective January 1, 2026. This will result in the furlough of approximately 270 pilots who are currently employed by the airline.

In addition to these furloughs, Spirit Airlines has also decided to furlough approximately 1,800 flight attendants, which is about one-third of its cabin crew, effective December 1. These furloughs are expected to save the company $211 million in costs, according to a filing.

This announcement comes after the company has already furloughed about 330 pilots and made the decision to reject its commitment to purchase 52 Airbus planes and its options for 10 others. The airline plans to shrink its fleet by almost 100 aircraft as part of its restructuring efforts.

In a statement, Spirit Airlines stated that these changes are necessary as part of their ongoing restructuring efforts to return to profitability and align their staffing with their current and future business needs. The company has not yet disclosed any further details about the impact of these changes on its workforce.

The airline industry has been hit hard by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with many airlines struggling to stay afloat. Spirit Airlines is just one of many companies that have been forced to make significant changes in order to survive during these challenging times. With the future of travel still uncertain, it is likely that more airlines will continue to make similar workforce changes in the months to come.

In the meantime, Spirit Airlines remains committed to providing safe and affordable travel options for its customers. The company continues to monitor the situation and make necessary adjustments in order to ensure its long-term success.
