Delta Air Lines: Leading the Way in Aviation for 100 Years
Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Karyn Greer from Channel 2, discussing the company’s legacy, challenges, and future plans. As Georgia’s largest non-government employer, Delta has a significant impact on the state’s economy, employing nearly 37,000 people and operating around 5,000 flights per day worldwide.
Delta’s Success and Impact on Georgia
Bastian shared that Delta is currently thriving, with a strong brand reputation and a focus on providing premium service to its customers. In its 100-year history, Delta has had an economic impact of nearly $58 billion in Georgia alone. This success is not only beneficial for the company but also for the state’s economy as a whole.
When asked about the current economic uncertainty and how it may affect the airline industry, Bastian expressed confidence in Delta’s position. He explained that while the lower-end airlines may face challenges, Delta’s target market consists of a higher-end economic strata, which continues to support their business.
Effects of the Government Shutdown on Delta
Regarding the ongoing government shutdown, Bastian stated that it has not had a significant impact on Delta’s operations. He also emphasized the importance of essential workers being paid, and assured that Delta is closely monitoring the situation and will make adjustments if necessary.
However, Bastian did mention the potential stress that air traffic controllers may face due to not receiving their paychecks until the shutdown is resolved. He also highlighted the need for modernizing and updating the country’s air traffic control system, which has not been done in over 50 years.
Safety in the Skies
Despite a few notable incidents, Bastian reassured passengers that flying is safe and that Delta takes safety very seriously. He also highlighted the company’s commitment to holding the highest safety standards, with a massive maintenance hangar in Atlanta that is the largest in North America.
Celebrating 100 Years and Fostering a Special Workplace Culture
Delta’s employees, also known as “the Delta difference,” were recently celebrated at the company’s 100th-anniversary bash at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Bastian expressed his gratitude for the team and emphasized that their success is due to the company’s founder, who believed in taking good care of employees, leading to their loyalty and dedication to the company.
Delta’s forward-thinking leader, Charisse Evans, highlighted Delta’s impact on the community and its commitment to supporting it. She also mentioned the crucial role Delta’s employees played during the defining moment in the company’s history when they successfully fought off a takeover bid in 2007.
Flying into the Future
Bastian shared that Delta has plans for a “Delta One Lounge” at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and is focusing on international growth in its second century of operation.
