Vienna International Airport (VIE) is the largest and busiest airport in Austria, serving as the main hub for the country’s national carrier, Austrian Airlines. It also supports a large network of low-cost carriers, including Ryanair and Wizz Air, and offers flights to nearly 200 destinations worldwide.
Passenger and Cargo Records
In 2024, VIE achieved a record-breaking year with over 31. 7 million passengers, a slight increase from 2019’s total of 31. 6 million. This also marked the airport’s highest revenue and projected a continued growth trend through 2025.
The increase in passenger traffic can be attributed to Austrian Airlines, which holds a market share of 46% at VIE. Low-cost carriers have also contributed to the airport’s resurgence, accounting for nearly 30% of the market. VIE also handled its highest-ever cargo tonnage in 2024, with over 297,000 tonnes.
Passenger Statistics
The airport’s seat load factor reached a record high of 80. 8% in 2024. While the number of aircraft movements decreased by 12% from 2019, higher load factors and increased aircraft capacity led to a rise in passenger numbers. The majority of passengers at VIE are local travelers, while transit traffic accounts for 22% of overall traffic.
Financial Outlook
VIE achieved record revenues of €506. 6 million ($562 million) in 2024, surpassing its previous record from 2023. The airport’s operator, Flughafen Wien AG, also registered its highest-ever share price and market capitalization.
Overall, Flughafen Wien AG, which also includes international strategic investments in Malta Airport and Kosice Airport, served over 41. 4 million passengers in 2024, a 9. 1% increase from the previous year and a 4. 8% increase from 2019.
Top Destinations
The top three countries in terms of passenger numbers at VIE were Germany, Spain, and Italy. As a hub for Lufthansa Group, Germany accounted for over half of all passengers at VIE. The top three summer holiday destinations were Antalya, Barcelona, and Mallorca, while Bangkok, New York, and Taipei were the busiest long-haul connections.
New Routes and Expansion Plans
VIE is projected to continue its growth trend through 2025, with several new routes and expansions planned. These include the addition of Asian low-cost carrier Scoot, which will offer direct flights to Singapore, and multiple new routes from Jet2 for the winter season.
The airport is also currently expanding its Terminal 3 facility, which will add an additional 70,000 square meters of space and 18 new gates to increase capacity. The expansion project, set to be completed by 2027, aims to position VIE as a five-star airport by 2030.
