Transportation Secretary Unveils Plan to Address Air Traffic Control Issues at Newark Airport
The U.S. Transportation Secretary has recently announced a plan to address the ongoing air traffic control (ATC) system outages at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). These outages, which occurred on April 28, May 9, and May 11, have caused delays and cancellations for multiple flights.
The April 28 and May 9 outages were brief, but the loss of communication between pilots and controllers posed potential safety hazards. As a temporary solution, the U.S. Transportation Department (DOT) directed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to install a software patch to add redundancy to EWR’s outdated ATC system. However, on May 11, there was another outage that resulted in a ground stop for 45 minutes, causing further disruptions for flights.
In a media briefing on May 12, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that work had begun to replace old copper telecommunications lines with modern fiber-optic lines at EWR, New York John F. Kennedy (JFK), and New York LaGuardia (LGA). However, these lines will need to be tested before they can be activated, which could take until the end of May.
