Aer Lingus, a popular budget airline, has announced that it will be ending all transatlantic flights from Manchester Airport within the next two months. This decision will affect up to 60 weekly services on three major tourist routes, including flights to New York JFK, Barbados, and Orlando.

Passengers who have already booked tickets for these flights will be contacted directly by Aer Lingus and provided with re-accommodation or refund options. The airline is currently in the process of notifying affected passengers and asks for their patience and cooperation during this time.

However, short-haul flights to Dublin and Belfast will continue for now. Aer Lingus has also hinted that it may cease operations from Manchester entirely, as the airline has been facing economic pressures and challenges with industrial relations.

This news comes after continued industrial action at the airline’s Manchester base. In October and November, cabin crew belonging to the trade union Unite went on strike due to a dispute over pay. The airline also faced a clash with the Irish Airline Pilots’ Association when a captain was suspended for refusing to move non-union crew from economy to business class seats on a flight from Barbados to Manchester.

According to Anton Radchenko, an aviation expert, this move by Aer Lingus is a warning sign that regional long-haul aviation in the UK is becoming unsustainable under current cost pressures. Airlines are consolidating their networks and retreating to main hubs, making it difficult for regional flights to remain profitable.

This decision by Aer Lingus will have a significant impact on travel options for passengers flying from Manchester. It is also a reminder that convenient direct flights may disappear with little notice due to the challenges faced by airlines in the industry.

Passengers who have booked flights with Aer Lingus from Manchester are advised to keep a close eye on their travel plans and make alternative arrangements if necessary. The airline will continue to operate flights to and from Dublin and Belfast, providing some relief for travelers. However, this decision highlights the fragility of regional long-haul aviation in the UK and the need for passengers to be aware of potential changes in their travel plans.
