Korean Air (KE) has announced plans to modernize its cargo facility at New York’s JFK International Airport. As one of the largest cargo facilities on the US East Coast, the terminal has a warehouse floor area of 17,065 sqm and an annual handling capacity of 200,000 tonnes.
In partnership with Lödige Industries, the airline aims to improve service quality, operational efficiency, and sustainability of its operations in the area. Junho Choi, Korean Air Cargo’s Regional Manager for the New York, Washington, and Boston area, stated that JFK is a key hub in their growing global network and serves as their gateway for cargo services along the East Coast.
The modernization plan includes the implementation of advanced automated systems to enhance productivity and safety. This will involve the installation of two fully automated Elevating Transfer Vehicles (ETVs) for more efficient and higher-capacity ULD handling. Fixed transfer vehicles will also be replaced with Cargo Pallet Movers to improve ULD transport and maximize space efficiency. Additionally, 14 workstations will be upgraded with modern models.
Improvements to the Cool Chain facilities are also a major focus of the modernization project. This includes the construction of a new refrigerated warehouse and upgrades to existing temperature-controlled facilities. The current temperature-controlled warehouse areas will undergo renovations such as renewing temperature controllers, roller conveyors, and shutters to ensure reliability and efficiency.
Choi added that by modernizing the terminal with state-of-the-art automation technology, they are ensuring long-term efficiency, higher safety standards, and increased sustainability of their operations. Jonathan Hardy, managing director North America at Lödige Industries, stated that Korean Air Cargo is known for its high-quality cargo service and the modernized terminal will meet the highest customer demands at JFK for years to come.
