In a groundbreaking moment for the aviation industry, a recent American Airlines flight from Corpus Christi, Texas to Dallas/Fort Worth became the first commercial service to be powered by electro sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF). This fuel, produced by clean fuels and technology company Infinium, marks a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainability in the airline industry.
The eSAF batch used on the American Airlines flight was produced at Infinium’s plant in Corpus Christi, using green processes that involve waste CO₂ and renewable electricity. After being mixed with conventional jet fuel and tested, the eSAF was delivered to Corpus Christi International Airport and allocated to American’s flight to DFW. This marks the first delivery of eSAF to a commercial airport and its first use in a commercial flight.
According to Infinium, their eSAF can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by over 90% when compared to conventional petroleum-based jet fuel. This is a significant reduction that will help to combat the negative environmental impact of air travel. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom expressed his excitement about this milestone, stating that this flight “represents a significant moment for aviation. ” He also emphasized the importance of scaling up SAF production at lower costs in order to reduce emissions and remain competitive in the long term.
American Airlines has already secured an offtake agreement with Infinium for commercial volumes of eSAF from their Project Roadrunner. This initiative, which is partially supported by a separate agreement with Citi, is expected to begin eSAF production and deliveries in 2027. Once fully operational, Project Roadrunner will produce over five million gallons of eSAF annually for American Airlines.
While numerous airlines and private charter companies have invested in SAF, its use remains limited due to high costs and a smaller scale of production when compared to conventional aviation fuels. However, with initiatives like Project Roadrunner, it is clear that the industry is moving towards a more sustainable future. This is an important step towards reducing the environmental impact of air travel and promoting a greener, more sustainable aviation industry.
