JetBlue Airways Recognized as Industry Leader for Sustainability and Diversity

In the eyes of judges, JetBlue Airways stands out as a leader in both sustainability and diversity. The airline has implemented policies, strategies, and actions that showcase its dedication to these areas.

One judge remarks, “They are doing a great job – they have a lot to be proud of. ” This statement reflects the airline’s many achievements, including its ambitious goals for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) usage and offtake, investments in environmental technology firms, and a strong emphasis on diversity in its C-suite and throughout the organization.

Of particular note is the appointment of Joanna Geraghty as chief executive in 2023. She is the first female chief executive of a major US airline and leads a team with over 50% female representation. This is evident in Airline Business’s annual C-suite survey, which consistently shows JetBlue having the highest proportion of women in leadership roles among all global airlines for the past seven years.

JetBlue has also made it a priority to increase representation of racial and ethnic minorities in its officer and director positions. This commitment to diversity is evident throughout the organization, with a dedicated Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Group that spearheads initiatives such as growth and development programs to provide opportunities for underrepresented communities.

The airline has also taken steps to create a more inclusive workspace by implementing policies that remove gender distinctions in uniforms, hair, and make-up requirements.

In addition to its focus on diversity, JetBlue has made sustainability a central part of its business strategy. This is evident in its goal to reach 10% SAF usage by 2030 and its recent milestone of becoming the first airline to supply SAF for regular commercial air travel in New York City. It has also joined The Climate Pledge, a commitment to achieve the net-zero target of the Paris Agreement 10 years ahead of schedule in 2040. JetBlue joins other major companies such as Best Buy, Mercedes-Benz, Uber, and Verizon in this initiative.

JetBlue has also made significant investments in sustainable travel through its venture capital fund, JetBlue Technology Ventures. The fund, which recently sold to private equity, focuses on early-stage start-ups in the travel and hospitality industry, with a particular focus on sustainability. So far, it has invested in eight sustainability-related companies, including Air Company (a carbon capture firm), Electric Power Systems (advanced battery technology), Universal Hydrogen (developing a hydrogen-powered regional airliner), I6 (a digital fuel management technology company), Rubicon Carbon (a carbon market solutions provider also backed by TPG Rise Climate), and Joby Aviation (developing an all-electric eVTOL aircraft).

JetBlue also gives back to communities through its JetBlue For Good month, where it donates millions of TrueBlue points to charitable organizations and encourages its employees to volunteer in projects across its network.

One judge sums up JetBlue’s efforts by stating, “It is easy to talk the talk
