Spirit Airlines Expands Route Network with New Services to Chattanooga, Columbia, and Birmingham

In an effort to expand its services and reach new destinations, Spirit Airlines has recently added several new routes to its network. These new routes include flights to Chattanooga, Tennessee, from Fort Lauderdale, Newark, and Orlando. This is part of the airline’s plan to add three new cities to its route map by 2025, including Columbia, South Carolina, which it previously served in 2008 and 2009.

This expansion comes at a crucial time for Spirit Airlines, as it has recently gone through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy process to restructure its debt. Additionally, the airline has faced challenges in the US market, with a shift towards premium travel and economic uncertainty affecting travel demand. Despite these challenges, Spirit Airlines remains committed to providing affordable and convenient travel options for its customers.

New Routes to Chattanooga

On June 4th and 5th, Spirit Airlines launched three new routes from Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA) to Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), and Orlando International Airport (MCO). These new routes provide the airport with non-stop and affordable flights, giving travelers in the region more options for their travel plans.

Duncan Dee, Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications at Spirit Airlines, stated that these new services will allow Chattanoogans to explore exciting destinations at a great value. April Cameron, President and CEO of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority, added that this partnership with Spirit Airlines will expand travel options for the region and strengthen Chattanooga’s role as a gateway to the Southeast.

Previously Unserved Routes and Other New Services

According to data from Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning tool, Chattanooga was last connected to Fort Lauderdale in 2007-2009 by Allegiant Air, and to Newark by United Airlines in 2016-2018. Delta Air Lines has been the only airline to offer flights from Chattanooga to New York since 2024. However, Spirit Airlines has now filled this gap and is offering new services to these destinations.

In addition to the new routes from Chattanooga, Spirit Airlines has also recently started flying from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM), Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE), and will soon begin service from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV). These new routes demonstrate the airline’s commitment to expanding its network and providing affordable travel options to more customers.

Florida-Focused Route Network

Looking at Spirit Airlines’ schedules for the first ten months of 2025, its top two busiest airports are located in Florida, with 536 weekly departures from Fort Lauderdale and 419 from Orlando. The airline has also added flights from other cities such as Birmingham, Columbia, and Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU). However, it has reduced services from 46 airports and will operate 1,360 fewer weekly flights compared to June 2024.
