Global Airlines, a virtual airline based in the UK, has recently launched its first flights using the Airbus A380 through a wet-lease agreement with charter carrier Hi Fly. The airline’s decision to use the four-engine A380, known for its high fuel consumption, has raised concerns about its sustainability. However, Global Airlines remains determined to revive the Golden Age of travel and has promised to offer enhancements such as ensuite first class suites onboard.
The carrier has started its operations from two UK airports, namely Glasgow Airport (GLA) and Manchester Airport (MAN), with flights to New York JFK International Airport (JFK). It has also expressed its intention to establish a base in London, the capital of the UK. The inaugural flight took off from Glasgow to New York on May 15th, followed by a Manchester roundtrip flight last week.
While the airline has not announced any new routes beyond its current Manchester and Glasgow to New York connections, its founder James Asquith has stated that the carrier plans to aggressively expand its fleet and route network. So, where could Global Airlines potentially launch its next routes?
1.
One of the busiest international airports in the US, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is a popular destination for travelers on the West Coast. Global Airlines has shown interest in this airport, with speculations suggesting that the carrier would launch a direct service from London Gatwick Airport (LGW). The airline had previously planned to start flights from London’s second airport and had set a launch date of late 2024, but it has not secured any slots yet. With its recent operations from the north of the UK, Global Airlines has indicated its desire to establish a more permanent presence at a London airport. Despite competition from other airlines, the carrier remains determined to enter the highly competitive transatlantic market.
Currently, four airlines – American Airlines, British Airways, United Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic – operate flights to LAX from London Heathrow (LHR), while Norse Atlantic, a low-cost long-haul airline, offers flights from Gatwick. Interestingly, LAX has the highest number of A380 flights among all US airports, with British Airways operating a daily A380 flight from Heathrow.

Another route that Global Airlines had promised to operate from London Gatwick is to New York JFK, the destination of its first two flights launched earlier this month. The London-New York air corridor is highly competitive, with over three million passengers flying from London Heathrow to JFK each year. While Gatwick sees relatively fewer passengers traveling to JFK – around half a million last year – there is still a significant market for Global Airlines to compete in.
British Airways, Delta Air Lines, and Norse Atlantic already offer flights on this route, indicating a healthy demand for this market.
