Florida’s commercial air travel has experienced a significant boom following the pandemic, driven by a surge in leisure travel on both domestic and international routes and the state’s fast-growing economy. Cirium reports that Florida’s air traffic has grown at a rate more than double the national average over the past five years, with one out of every five airline seats in the US touching down in the Sunshine State.
Interestingly, nearly 95% of commercial air traffic in Florida is concentrated in its seven largest airports, which are expected to collectively handle over 200 million passengers by 2025. However, only one of these airports serves as a major airline hub, with the others facing intense competition and a fragmented market share among multiple airlines. Using data from Cirium, let’s take a closer look at the seven busiest airports in Florida in 2025.
Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) has seen significant growth post-pandemic, handling a record 7. 6 million passengers last year. The airport is currently undergoing a $440 million expansion project, including the rebuilding of Concourse B, which will add up to 10 new gates and increase the airport’s capacity by 50%. American Airlines holds the largest market share at JAX, followed by Delta Air Lines. However, the fastest-growing airline at the airport is Breeze Airways, which now offers 14 routes from Jacksonville, including the longest route to Los Angeles. Jacksonville is also home to the 125th Fighter Wing of the Florida Air National Guard, which is transitioning to new Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II fighter jets.
Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) has also experienced a surge in post-pandemic leisure travel, handling 27% more air traffic in the past couple of years. The airport is currently undergoing a $141 million expansion project, which will add two new passenger boarding bridges and expanded seating and hold room capacity. JetBlue holds the largest market share at PBI, offering the longest route to Los Angeles with its famous Mint service. PBI is also a major private aviation facility, with a new terminal recently opened by Signature Aviation.
Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) serves the cities of Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples, and Punta Gorda, and is the second-busiest single runway airport in the US after San Diego. It has seen a surge in passenger traffic, with 11 million passengers last year. To accommodate this growth, RSW is undergoing a $1. 1 billion terminal expansion project, including a new Concourse E with 14 gates. Southwest Airlines holds the largest market share at RSW, followed by Delta. RSW also offers the first transatlantic route on the list, courtesy of Discover Airlines to Frankfurt.
Tampa International Airport (TPA) is the fourth busiest airport in Florida and has seen significant growth, serving nearly 25 million passengers last year. The airport has recently broken ground on a new $1.
