Etihad Airways Launches Nonstop Flights to Charlotte, North Carolina

Etihad Airways, based in Abu Dhabi, has recently announced its plans to launch nonstop flights to Charlotte, North Carolina starting on May 4, 2026. This will be the sixth U. S. destination for the airline and the first time a Middle Eastern carrier has provided direct service to the city.

Expanding Economic Links and Ambitions in the U. S.

The announcement, made with little notice to local officials, highlights Etihad’s goals to grow in the U. S. and deepen economic ties between the UAE and secondary markets in the country.

The flights will operate four times a week on the airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner, offering both business and economy class with connections to the Middle East and Asia via Abu Dhabi.

Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad, states, “Charlotte is a strategic addition to our U. S. network, providing direct access to one of the country’s most dynamic and fast-growing regions. We are thrilled to be the first airline from our region to serve this market and look forward to connecting more travelers to Abu Dhabi and beyond.

Charlotte: A Strategic Market for Etihad and Abu Dhabi

Home to major banks such as Bank of America and Truist, as well as a growing tech and motorsports scene, Charlotte is a significant business hub in the U. S. Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is ranked sixth in the world for aircraft movements and saw a 13% increase in international traffic last year.

Haley Gentry, CEO of Charlotte Douglas International Airport, says, “Etihad’s arrival is a milestone for CLT as we continue to expand our global reach. This new route opens the door to the Middle East and beyond, providing our passengers with greater access to international destinations and strengthening Charlotte’s role as a key gateway for global travel.

City leaders are also excited about the news, with Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles stating, “The addition of a direct flight to Abu Dhabi reinforces Charlotte as a world-class city. These new, nonstop flights will be sure to welcome both increased tourism and new business to our region.

Major Perks for Frequent Flyers

With U. S. Customs and Border Protection Preclearance in Abu Dhabi, passengers heading to Charlotte will arrive as domestic travelers, making the journey more convenient for frequent flyers.

Skepticism Amid the Celebrations

However, despite the excitement, the announcement caught local officials off guard. As pointed out by industry watchdog @xJonNYC on X, The Charlotte Ledger reported that airport staff only learned about the new route two days before it was made public. Kaitlin Price, CLT’s airline affairs manager, was first contacted by Etihad on Wednesday, and by Friday morning, the press release was out, and tickets were already on sale.

This surprise rollout raises questions about long-term demand, as Charlotte does not have a significant UAE expatriate population.
