Delta Pilots Issue Warning for Potential Summer Travel Disruptions

Pilots from Delta Airlines, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), have launched a new website to inform customers about potential delays and cancellations that may occur during the upcoming summer travel season.

The website, deltapilotscare. com, features a message from the pilots to travelers emphasizing their commitment to prioritizing safety while also acknowledging potential challenges due to thunderstorms, staffing shortages, and maintenance work.

In their statement, the pilots express empathy for the frustrations of passengers who have experienced disruptions to their travel plans and acknowledge that the current situation is unacceptable. They also highlight their efforts to work extra shifts in order to assist customers in reaching their destinations.

To help mitigate potential travel disruptions, the website offers a range of travel recommendations including booking the first flight of the day, utilizing the Fly Delta app, and enrolling in programs such as TSA PreCheck, CLEAR, or Global Entry to expedite security screenings and customs. Additionally, a video on the website outlines passengers’ rights in the event of a delayed or cancelled flight.

The debut of deltapilotscare. com comes as the ALPA’s Delta Master Executive Council (MEC) begins negotiations for a new contract with the airline. This approach is not uncommon in the industry, as other airline work groups have previously used temporary websites to communicate with the public during contract discussions and to voice concerns about their employer.

It is possible that the pilots are also seeking to preempt and redirect any frustration from customers towards Delta in the event of travel disruptions during the busy summer season.

Eric Criswell, chairman of the Delta MEC, stated in a news release that the pilots are committed to maintaining Delta’s reputation as a premium brand and providing customers with the level of service they have come to expect.

A contract opener released in April outlines the MEC’s top priorities for negotiations, including “industry-leading” pay, enhanced scope protections, higher company contributions to retirement, and additional holiday pay. The pilots also list desired quality of life improvements such as better deadhead provisions, improved layover accommodations, and increased schedule flexibility.

The pilots’ current contract is set to expire at the end of the year. The MEC plans to update deltapilotscare. com throughout the summer with additional tips and guidance for travelers.
