House to Return for Vote On Shutdown Deal
After a 40-day stalemate, a small group of Senate Democrats broke the impasse on Sunday evening and voted with Republicans to move forward with legislation that would end the government shutdown. House Speaker Mike Johnson is urging House lawmakers to return to Washington “right now” as the Senate works towards a final vote on the bill. Possible Delays and Cancellations Continue Despite Shutdown End
Even if the government shutdown ends, air travelers should expect worsening cancellations and delays this week. The Federal Aviation Administration is moving ahead with deeper cuts to flights at 40 major U. S. airports. After a weekend of thousands of canceled flights, airlines have scrapped another 1,700 flights on Monday and nearly 1,000 for Tuesday. ByHeart officials have recalled two lots of the company’s Whole Nutrition Infant Formula. Botulism is a rare but serious disease that can cause paralysis and death, with symptoms taking weeks to develop.
Details of Legislation to End Federal Government Shutdown
A legislative package to end the government shutdown is on track after a handful of Senate Democrats joined with Republicans to advance the bill. While hurdles remain, senators are hopeful they can pass the package as soon as Monday and send it to the House. However, the legislation has drawn criticism and leaves few senators fully satisfied. It includes funding for SNAP food aid and other programs, as well as backpay for furloughed federal workers. However, it fails to fund expiring health care subsidies that Democrats have been fighting for, pushing that debate off for a vote next month.
