New Premium Economy Service to Be Introduced by American Airlines on Transcontinental Flights

American Airlines has announced the addition of premium economy service on its transcontinental flights between Los Angeles and New York, set to begin in October. This new offering will provide passengers with a more luxurious experience without the higher cost of domestic first class.

Already known for its exceptional onboard experience for premium passengers, American Airlines’ transcontinental flights between LAX and JFK will now offer a middle-ground option for travelers seeking a touch of luxury at a more affordable price. This move is expected to attract more price-conscious passengers and generate additional revenue for the airline.

Premium Economy to Launch on Transcontinental Route in October

The route between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and John F Kennedy International (JFK) in New York City is considered one of the most profitable domestic routes for US-based airlines. According to Cirium, an aviation analytics company, there are 1,844 scheduled flights between these two airports in July, with American Airlines operating 558 of them.

With this in mind, these lucrative and lengthy routes offer airlines the opportunity to attract high-value travelers with enhanced premium offerings, and American Airlines is taking advantage of this by introducing premium economy service on their LAX-JFK route in October. Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer for American Airlines, stated, “We are excited to provide customers the opportunity to experience our Premium Economy service on our premier domestic route. With the domestic debut of Premium Economy, customers will enjoy a more comfortable seat, enhanced amenities, and elevated dining with hot entree choices when traveling coast-to-coast.

Details of the New Premium Economy Service

Starting on October 5, select American Airlines flights between LAX and JFK will offer premium economy service, with bookings opening on July 28 through the airline’s website and app. Premium economy passengers will have priority at check-in, security, and boarding. Once onboard, they will have access to an amenity kit, featuring premium skincare products and travel essentials.

The seats in the premium economy cabin will provide more space and comfort, including a crepe weave blanket and lumbar pillows. Passengers will also enjoy a hot meal with salad and dessert served on chinaware, as well as complimentary drinks.

Comparison to Other Airlines’ Premium Economy Offerings

American Airlines is not the only carrier to offer premium economy service on domestic flights. Delta and United also have their own versions of this class, which are considered the most prominent in the market. American Airlines’ premium economy seats on their Airbus A321XLR jets provide 37 inches of pitch, six inches more than economy class, making it a more comfortable option for longer flights.

On their widebody aircraft, such as the Boeing 777-200ER and 777-300ER, premium economy seats have 38 inches of pitch, compared to 31 inches in economy class and 34 inches in Main Cabin Extra. They are also wider, at 18.
