Introducing the Seán Lemass Dublin International Airport Bill, Fianna Fáil TD Malcolm Byrne plans to rename Dublin Airport to honor the former Taoiseach and party leader, who passed away in 1971. Byrne believes that Lemass, often referred to as the “architect of Ireland’s economic modernisation,” deserves recognition for his contributions to the country.

Lemass served as Taoiseach and leader of Fianna Fáil from 1959 to 1966, after which he remained a backbench TD until 1969. Remembered for opening Ireland to global investment and positioning the country confidently on the international stage, Lemass is considered a key figure in Ireland’s development. Byrne believes that renaming Dublin Airport after him is a fitting tribute.

According to Byrne, Dublin Airport is “Ireland’s gateway to the world” and should bear the name of a leader who played a significant role in opening that gateway. He credits Lemass for overseeing the development of Ireland’s aviation sector, championing national infrastructure, and laying the foundation for the country’s current open and outward-looking stance.

Byrne highlights that many major airports around the world, such as Charles de Gaulle in Paris and JFK in New York, are named after political figures. He believes that Lemass, who stood for progress, ambition, and opportunity, is a suitable candidate for the same recognition. Renaming the airport in his honor would reflect Ireland’s pride in his legacy and confidence in its future.

While acknowledging that there are many important issues to address at Dublin Airport, Byrne believes that renaming it in honor of Lemass is a small but positive recognition that everyone can agree on. As he introduces the Seán Lemass Dublin International Airport Bill in the Dáil, Byrne wants to know if the public supports this name change.

In a poll conducted before the introduction of the bill, 106 readers voted in favor of changing the name to something else, while 58 were unsure or had no opinion. The remaining readers, like you, have contributed financially to keep vital information like this article free for everyone to access.
