Air Travel Woes: The Worst U.S. Airports for Flight Disruptions

Air travel in the United States has been facing numerous challenges in recent times. From bomb threats leading to airport closures to multiple plane crashes, flying has become a cause for concern for many travelers. But even when safety is not an issue, flight disruptions can still cause chaos and inconvenience. In fact, a recent study by AirHelp has revealed the worst U.S. airports to avoid based on the highest number of flight disruptions.

Ranked at the top of the list is Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), located just five miles away from Washington, D.C. in Arlington County, Virginia. This airport has experienced a staggering 40% of its flights being delayed or canceled in February 2025 alone, making it the worst airport in the country for flight disruptions.

The main reason for these disruptions at DCA is the high volume of air traffic, with the airport having the busiest runway in the U.S. Other contributing factors include inclement weather and preventable aircraft mishaps, such as the incident where a plane carrying U.S. Congress members was bumped by an American Airlines plane. In April 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) increased air control staffing at DCA, leading to even more delays.

The FAA’s decision to increase staffing came after a tragic accident in January 2025, where an American Airlines jet collided with an Army Black Hawk helicopter and plunged into the Potomac
