On Monday afternoon, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy held a press conference to address growing concerns about Newark Liberty International Airport. Despite being pressed by reporters, Duffy repeatedly shifted the blame for the airport’s issues to the previous Biden administration, contradicting his own statements.

Duffy claimed that the problems at Newark Airport, a major travel hub outside of New York City, were solely the result of failures by the Biden administration. He even doubled down on this claim when a reporter pointed out an inconsistency in his remarks.

During the question-and-answer session, a reporter questioned why the first Trump administration did not address these issues during their time in office. In response, Duffy stumbled and stated, “I think what we saw is the cracks that you are now seeing today were highlighted actually over the last four years.” He continued to criticize Biden for not allocating enough funds from the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill to address aviation issues.

However, Duffy’s claims are undermined by his own admission that these issues have been present for years. He seemingly revealed his biases when he accused Biden of failing to act during the COVID lockdown. “The last administration knew this was a problem,” Duffy said during the press conference. “During COVID, when people weren’t flying, that was a perfect time to fix these problems.” This statement ignores the fact that Trump was still in office when the pandemic first hit in March 2020 and caused worldwide shutdowns and travel restrictions.
