United Airlines Announces Massive Fleet Expansion Plan

United Airlines has revealed its ambitious plan to expand its fleet with over 250 new aircraft by April 2028. This marks the largest aircraft intake in a two-year period by any airline and is a significant part of the company’s long-term growth strategy, known as “United Next.

The expansion will include a mix of both widebody and narrowbody aircraft, as well as the introduction of new subfleets and upgraded onboard products. One exciting addition is the “Coastliner” Airbus A321neo, which will operate on transcontinental routes, connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles with Newark/New York. These planes will feature lie-flat business class seating and offer lounge access for domestic premium passengers.

United Airlines will also be deploying the Airbus A321XLR on international routes, replacing older Boeing 757 aircraft. The A321XLR will increase premium seating capacity and allow for expansion into smaller long-haul markets across Europe and South America.

In the regional segment, United will be introducing a redesigned CRJ450 to connect smaller cities with major hubs such as Denver and Chicago. The aircraft will offer an enhanced premium cabin experience, including redesigned interiors and improved passenger space.

Furthermore, the airline has already begun adding new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft with upgraded interiors. These planes will feature new premium suites with larger seating configurations, improved in-flight entertainment systems, and upgraded amenities across all cabins. The first international service with this configuration will operate between San Francisco and Singapore.

Since 2021, United has already added 22 Boeing 787 aircraft, 237 Boeing 737 MAX jets, and 67 Airbus A321neos to its fleet, while also retrofitting a significant portion of its narrowbody fleet. It has also replaced over 100 smaller regional jets with larger aircraft, increasing premium seat capacity per North American departure by 40%.

Along with the expansion of its fleet, United is also investing in passenger experience enhancements, such as satellite-based Wi-Fi connectivity, upgraded in-flight entertainment systems, and improvements in onboard services across all cabins. These initiatives aim to provide a more consistent and premium travel experience while also strengthening United’s competitive position in the global aviation market.
