An unidentified object shattered the windshield of a United Airlines Boeing 737 at an altitude of 36,000 feet, causing the pilot to sustain injuries and prompting an emergency landing. The incident occurred on United Flight 1093, which was travelling from Denver to Los Angeles. The plane was diverted to Salt Lake City, where it landed safely.

The pilot was seen with cuts and bruises on both arms, likely caused by flying glass. The cockpit was covered in shattered glass and the dashboard showed dark scorch marks near the damaged area. Photos of the damage were shared online, sparking speculation about the cause of the impact.

United Airlines released a statement saying, “On Thursday, United flight 1093 landed safely in Salt Lake City to address damage to its multilayered windshield. We arranged for another aircraft to take customers to Los Angeles later that day and our maintenance team is working to return the aircraft to service.

The aircraft remains grounded while the cause of the impact is being investigated. Some online speculation suggested a meteor strike or space debris, but experts say this is unlikely. According to a 2023 FAA report, the odds of space debris seriously injuring someone on a commercial flight are one in a trillion.

Salt Lake City airport officials credited a specialized safety system for preventing a more serious accident. The incident occurred around 10 p. m. EST and the pilot reported no injuries, but mentioned being in the EMAS (Engineered Materials Arresting System). This system, made of crushable concrete, is designed to slow down aircraft that overshoot the runway.

Alexa Briehl, the airport’s PR marketing and media manager, explained, “When an aircraft rolls over it, it sinks in and decelerates the aircraft and it’s like a runway truck ramp at the end of a runway. At the end of that runway, there’s a ditch, there’s a fence, a ditch, and then a main road called Peters Creek Road.

Some aviation specialists have suggested that an electrical malfunction could have caused the windshield to crack. However, the presence of scorch marks and shattered glass suggests an external impact.

This incident is particularly unusual because it occurred at cruising altitude, where encounters with birds, hail, or other debris are rare. NASA continues to monitor over 25,000 pieces of orbital debris larger than four inches, raising concerns for the safety of aircraft and spacecraft.
