U. S.
In response to soaring fuel costs, U. S. airline United Airlines has announced plans to significantly increase ticket prices, potentially by up to 20%. This announcement was made during the company’s results presentation via video conference on Wednesday by CEO Scott Kirby. The airline aims to pass on the entire increase in fuel costs to ticket prices as quickly as possible in order to achieve a profit margin exceeding 10% before taxes by next year.
Fuel Costs to Blame
Kirby stated that the goal is to offset 100% of the increase in fuel costs, which are expected to last longer than originally anticipated. This announcement comes as United Airlines has lowered its profit forecasts for the second quarter and the full year, falling below Wall Street’s expectations. Despite sustained demand, particularly in the high-end travel segment, the surge in jet fuel prices is weighing on the company’s margins.
European Pressure
The rise in fuel costs is not limited to U. S. carriers, as European authorities are also closely monitoring the situation. European Commissioner for Transport, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, stated from Brussels that no massive wave of flight cancellations is expected this summer, despite growing tensions over jet fuel supply. He also clarified that the European Commission is closely monitoring developments in energy markets and is prepared to take action if necessary.
Possible Solutions
Some airlines have already cancelled flights due to high fuel costs, directly affecting ticket prices. The European Commission is discussing the possibility of using strategic reserves if necessary, but believes the situation does not currently require this action. The Director of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, warned earlier this week that Europe has enough jet fuel reserves for approximately six weeks. However, he also cautioned that there could be flight cancellations if the Strait of Hormuz does not reopen quickly. In response, the European Commission is preparing new measures for the coming weeks to streamline energy consumption, including the creation of a unit dedicated to monitoring oil markets.
