Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh recently met with Ivan Mihaylov, CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria (AmCham) to discuss the potential for deepening the tourism exchange partnership between Bulgaria and the United States. One of the main topics of discussion was the possibility of restoring direct flights between Sofia and New York, which could have a significant impact on tourism between the two countries.
The meeting focused on the potential benefits of non-stop flights between Bulgaria and the U. S. According to initial studies, the reinstatement of this route could lead to a 350% increase in passenger traffic between the two cities, with an estimated 85,000 passengers annually. It was also revealed that 87% of travellers between Sofia and New York currently only fly between these two cities, highlighting the need for a direct route.
Minister Borshosh highlighted the efforts already made by the state to improve tourism and emphasized the importance of restoring direct air connectivity with the U. S. This would not only attract more American tourists to Bulgaria but also create opportunities for increased investment in the country.
AmCham CEO Ivan Mihaylov expressed the significance of the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the United States at a governmental level. He also pledged AmCham’s support in promoting a favorable investment climate and economic growth in Bulgaria.
Both sides announced their commitment to work closely together to make the initiative for direct flights a reality. This effort is considered of strategic importance as it would facilitate connections between two distant markets, promoting bilateral tourism, business, and cultural exchange between the two nations.
According to recent data from the National Statistical Institute, there were 6,157 visits to Bulgaria by U. S. citizens in June, with the majority for vacation and travel purposes.
It was also noted that the last regular direct flight from Sofia to New York was operated by Balkan Airlines in 1999. However, at that time, Bulgarian carriers were banned by the U. S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) from flying to U. S. airports. This ban was lifted in 2008, opening the possibility for the restoration of direct flights between the two countries.
