Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport has placed the highest bid for a former hangar previously utilized by Spirit Airlines on the airport’s premises.

Records from the court, as reported by CBS News on Wednesday, reveal that the airport authority, responsible for owning and managing the airport, has agreed to pay $18 million to acquire the lease for the hangar. The bid from the agency has been deemed the “highest and best” among all other submissions.

In a statement to CBS News, the WCAA stated, “We have been informed by the bankruptcy court that our bid was successful, however, the final decision will be made after August 4th. While we continue to explore all options for the hangar, it would be premature to make any plans until after the court’s decision.

As reported by The Detroit News, the hangar, measuring 126,000 square feet, was previously the largest maintenance facility for aircraft in Spirit’s network. The hangar was home to around 100 technicians until early May when Spirit suspended its operations.

A small group of Spirit employees are currently overseeing the sale of the remaining assets of the carrier, including hangars, aircraft, equipment, and other infrastructure. The funds generated from the sale will be utilized to repay the company’s creditors.
