Record Number of Travelers Expected at New York and New Jersey Airports and Crossings During Thanksgiving Holiday

Between Monday, November 24 and Monday, December 1 of 2025, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s airports and vehicular crossings are expected to see a record-breaking 8. 8 million travelers. This would be the highest number of travelers during a Thanksgiving holiday period in the agency’s history.

The Port Authority predicts that of the 8. 8 million travelers, around 3. 3 million will use John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia, and New York Stewart International airports. The busiest days are expected to be Sunday, November 30 and Monday, December 1. This projected number of travelers is only a 1% increase from the previous record set in 2024.

In addition to air travel, the Port Authority estimates that 5. 5 million vehicles will use its bridges and tunnels during the holiday period. This is consistent with the volume seen during the same period in 2024. To accommodate the expected high volume, all ongoing repairs and construction projects at the crossings will be suspended from 5 a. m. on Wednesday, November 26 to 5 a. m. on Monday, December 1. Any lane closures or service changes for the remainder of that week will be announced on December 1.

To help make the travel experience smoother for all passengers, the Port Authority advises travelers to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time. Due to higher passenger volume and ongoing construction at John F. Kennedy International Airport, longer wait times are expected. The airport has made changes to its roadway network and for-hire vehicle pickup areas, so it is important for travelers to check the Port Authority’s air travel tips for information on how to prepare for their trip. This includes finding real-time wait time information for TSA security lines, parking lot availability, AirTrain maps and schedules, and directions for public transit and for-hire vehicles.
