New Flat Fare Introduced for Taxi Rides from Sydney Airport to CBD
For travelers arriving in Sydney, the journey from the airport to the city center can be a daunting and expensive experience. After a long flight, going through immigration, waiting for luggage, and going through customs and quarantine, the taxi ride can feel like the final hurdle.
In a move to eliminate overpriced fares and improve the overall experience for travelers, the New South Wales government has announced a new flat fare for taxi rides from Sydney’s Kingsford-Smith International Airport to the Central Business District (CBD). This change brings Sydney in line with other major cities such as New York and Paris, which already have fixed fares in place.
Starting on November 3, a taxi ride from the airport to the city will cost a flat rate of $60 for the 13-kilometer journey. This pricing structure will be in place for a year-long trial, and for larger maxi taxis, the cost will be $80. Additionally, the fixed fare includes the road tolls and airport access fees, meaning passengers will not be charged any additional fees.
It’s important to note that this change does not apply to rideshare operators like Uber. However, it does aim to address the ongoing issue of overcharging and refusing to use meters by some taxi drivers. Since the introduction of the Taxi Fare Hotline in November 2022, over 1,100 fines have been issued to drivers for these offenses. In one extreme case, a driver charged an overseas family $188. 76 for a trip from the airport to their hotel in the CBD, resulting in a $2000 fine.
The government hopes that by implementing a fixed fare, it will discourage taxi drivers from touting for business inside the airport’s arrival hall, where approximately 5,000 taxis queue up daily to pick up travelers from both the international and domestic terminals.
Transport Minister John Graham has stated that the aim of this trial is to provide a warm welcome and fair experience for all visitors and returning Sydneysiders. He acknowledges that the current practices of overcharging and refusing to use meters have negatively impacted the arrival experience for many travelers.
