Chautauqua County has chosen longtime aviation professional John Machemer to lead its airport operations as the new deputy director of public facilities – airports. In this role, Machemer will be responsible for managing and providing strategic direction for both the Jamestown and Dunkirk airports.
Machemer, who has been a resident of Chautauqua County for many years, began his career in aviation at these very airports. He started as a ramp technician at both locations before becoming a certified flight instructor, corporate Learjet pilot, and regional airline captain. Later, he held leadership positions with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), including as a lead air carrier principal inspector and front line manager, where he oversaw safety and compliance for commercial air carriers.
Machemer expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to return to the Chautauqua County Airport as its new manager. He shared his deep passion for the airport’s success and his commitment to working with the county, airport staff, and community to ensure safe, efficient, and valuable services for Chautauqua County. Together, they will collaborate with residents and local businesses to capitalize on the airport’s strategic location near major highways and rail corridors, promoting regional economic development and supporting general aviation, corporate travel, and potential new airline service at JHW. The goal is to strengthen these airports as vital gateways for tourism and commerce in Western New York.
As the deputy director, Machemer will oversee daily airport operations, long-term planning, and coordination with federal and state aviation authorities. He will also play a crucial role in leveraging the airports’ location along major highway and rail corridors to support regional development and tourism.
County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr. expressed his confidence in Machemer, stating that his return is a win for Chautauqua County. With his extensive technical knowledge, regulatory leadership, and familiarity with the county’s airports, he is expected to position both Jamestown and Dunkirk as valuable economic assets for the region.
Tim Card, the county’s Director of Public Facilities, also praised Machemer’s appointment, noting that his experience covers all levels of the aviation industry, from ground operations to FAA oversight. He is well-equipped to understand the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead and has the necessary leadership skills to guide the airports into the future.
Machemer officially assumed his role as deputy director in June 2025, and the county is looking forward to his contributions in this critical time for local aviation.
