Senator Schumer Urges Transportation Secretary to Fix Newark Airport Chaos

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is calling on U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to take immediate action to address the recent travel mishaps and chaos at Newark Airport.

According to Schumer, the situation at Newark Airport is “scary” and “unacceptable.” He expressed concerns about the safety of air travel under the Trump administration’s control of the FAA.

Schumer also pointed out that Newark Airport is not the only airport experiencing issues, and he worries about the potential for similar problems at other airports with less scrutiny.

The chaos at Newark Airport began on Thursday when over 500 flights were delayed and 200 were canceled. The disruptions continued throughout the weekend, causing frustration for travelers.

Secretary Duffy has attributed the problems to outdated technology, stating that “the technology we are using is old.” Schumer shared that the FAA has reported an average of 34 arrival cancellations per day at Newark since mid-April, with the number of delays increasing as the day goes on.

In response to the ongoing issues at Newark, Schumer is urging Secretary Duffy to prioritize fixing the airport. He outlined specific steps that need to be taken, including installing a direct fiber-optic connection between Newark Airport and the Philadelphia terminal radar approach control center.

In a statement, the FAA acknowledged the ongoing disruptions at Newark and stated that they are working to improve the reliability of the telecommunications equipment in the New York area.
