Update on Port Authority’s Airport and Transportation Projects
Rick Cotton, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, recently participated in City & State’s Transportation Summit on October 28th. He sat down for a fireside chat with Editor-in-Chief Ralph R. Ortega to provide updates on various ongoing capital projects in the region.
Construction projects are underway at the three airports of JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty. LaGuardia was recently recognized as the best airport in the United States for the second year in a row by Forbes Travel Guide, based on interviews with 9,000 travel writers and frequent travelers. Additionally, both LaGuardia and Terminal A at Newark have received a five-star rating from SkyTrax, an international rating service, making them among the top three airports in the country.
At Newark, a brand new Terminal A has recently opened its doors, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held for a new $3. 5 billion AirTrain project. The Port Authority’s goal is to make all three airports in the region the best in the world.
Moving on to JFK, there is a lot of construction happening at the airport, but it has continued to operate smoothly despite the increase in passenger volume. 2026 will be a significant year for JFK, as the first phases of two new international terminals will open, and the roadway network will be completed.
The Port Authority Bus Terminal, which has been a subject of criticism for many years, is finally undergoing a rebuild. A groundbreaking ceremony was recently held for the new bus tunnel, which has been long overdue. The new terminal will be a world-class transportation hub, as well as a vibrant part of the community. The Port Authority’s goal is to make it a net-zero facility by using modern technology and electric buses.
The bus terminal also plays a crucial role in the transformation of Eighth Avenue. The Port Authority sees it as a building block for the revitalization of the neighborhood. The construction period will be challenging, but the new terminal will not only be visually appealing but will also get buses off the street and reduce traffic congestion and emissions.
The Port Authority is also committed to working with other transportation agencies, such as Amtrak, to improve the corridor between the new bus terminal and Penn Station. Despite the challenges of working with the federal government, the Port Authority is self-sustaining and does not rely on federal funding for its projects. This allows them to continue making progress without external influences.
